Can incapacity benefits be backdated?

my partner has been off work for 4 weeks having pyhsio therapy and has a sick note, but hasn't made a claim yet. we didn't want to go on benifits.. 3 weeks on and we realised we should of claimed and struggling.... if we put a claim in now will they backdate it......
