I will be an international student who will be studying in US for a few years. I was thinking of getting a part time job while I'm studying but I heard it's not possible.

Is it true I won't be allowed to work while I'm a student?

Apart from scholarships which are so hard to get, how will I be able to pay for the extra costs such as food and transportation if I'm not allowed to work?

  1. The only employment than an international student is permitted to carry out is working on-campus and you are limited to 20 hours per week during the semester and full-time during the holidays.

No off-campus employment is permited except in cases of financial hardship that has not be foreseen.

As for paying the for extra costs, most international students are self-funded. Relying on the financial support of their parents, family members and the money which they have saved themselves. Some international students also take out small personl loans in their own country, but you must be careful and be aware of how much you will have to pay back on these.

Scholarships generally do not cover these extra expenses, they either pay for full or partial tution costs and not things like rent, utilites, gas, insurance etc.

  2. It is only allowed if you can work for 20 hours a week max. I would recommend you to find a job on campus that would be easier for you and all the deduction and tax c**p will be taken care of by the school.

However, you cannot work outside and you cannot work more than 20 hours on campus either. you will enter the united states on F-1 Visa so if you try to work outside, trust me, it will not be good for you. Make sure you stick to laws no matter what people tell you to do.

    Good Luck

  3. Only inside the place of institution, university. They can work only in the school. Not off campus, NOt anywhere else outiside of school..i see this all the time..internationals working at an off campus job like at donut shop or beauty supply where the owner and the student are from same country and the owner is nice and the student needs some money..this is illegal. Immigration tracks down and will catch them..of course international students have no social security number, exccept a few that work in the school campus, so the onwers pay in cash each day or weekly. this dangers the international student's visa, even they might not be allowed to come back to US because if you are caught working off campus as an international student, it leaves a mark in your records.
