  1. NOT a dumb question.....as thinking adults, you SHOULD question everything that affects your child. Yes, shots CAN be harmful to infants. In Japan, they don't even give their first shots until the child is 2 years old because their immune systems are too immature to handle the ingredients that are inside each vaccination.

She MUST do a lot of research regarding this very heated topic and see both sides of the equation. It's completely up to her to choose which if any shots her child will get. No one blanket answer will fit everyone.

  2. No. It's better to prevent diseases rather than have them get the disease that could make them miserable or leave them with complications.

All the hype about autism is just that- hype. My doctor agrees with me on this.  If a shot could give you autism everyone in the world would be autistic. People falsely think that chicken pox and MMR vaccines cause this and it is not true. It is just an unfortunate coincidence that the autism genes usually show full symptoms around the same age those shots in particuar are given.  She can also ask her pediatrician to spread shots out if she wants to space them to 1 or 2 a visit and she is certainly able to say "no" to any vaccine she is not comfortable with her child having or asking for said vaccine to be given when they are older.

My son has had both a chicken pox vaccine at 1 year and the MMR at 15 months and he did fine with both, and is not autistic from them.  The only side effect he had was a mild fever and he was really tired for a few days after the MMR, but that could happen with ANY vaccination. Even adults sometimes feel tired and ick after certain shots that they have. That's why they invented Tylenol.

Personally I am not so worried about illness in my home because I know what my home is in level of clean (lol- I am a germophob mom so you could eat off my garage floor if you wanted to), but it's OTHER places and kids that we come into contact with for nursery at church, the grocery store and general public places that make me nervous as to what he could pick up or be exposed to.  The shots don't fix everything but if they can prevent some of the icky diseases I went through as a child because they didn't have vaccines for them then, to me it's worth it.  Schools require certain ones anyway for admission so sooner or later shots are going to have to be faced for children.

  3. It's not a dumb question, and I'm surprised you're talking about your "new daughter in law" in such a way. All new mothers are overprotective and worried about their new babies. I'm sure YOU were this way with your own child(ren) too once. You should be more respectful to her concerns for YOUR grandchild, and realize that today's world is a far different place for raising a baby than when you had kids.

Anyway, MANY people think that vaccinations can cause problems, including autism. I personally give my baby vaccines because I believe the benefits far outweigh the risks. You can find loads upon loads of information online just by doing a simple search.

  4. I don't believe so. I like to protect my daughter from any diseases that are around. But many people believe that getting them causes Autism. I don't know if it does, I don't know if it doesn't, but all i know is that if i don't get my daughter her shots, she has a greater chance to get sick.

  5. The short answer?  Yes.  Adverse reactions can and do happen.

Your family member will have to weigh the risks and benefits herself.  Many people feel that the benefits outweigh the risks.   Many feel that the current schedule isn't reasonable and prefer to selectively vaccinate, delay certain vaccines, and possibly skip some or all.

Most babies and children and adults are just fine.  Some would argue that it's better for a few to suffer in order to protect the majority.

  6. I have read a couple of times that shots were harmful .. and not just for kids .. So when my son was born i went to a naturalist doctor .. since all that stuff is kinda "in" right now .. he told me that since shots are a rule for kids to start school he has to take them .. but there is always the natural detox that they do afterward.. why fill your kid up with a virus? .. I personally never took him for a detox just for the simple fact that I had all my shots and so has everyone in my family and we are all ok ... but no doctor makes themselves responsible just in case anything goes bad .. so just tell ur daughter in law to make sure her child doesnt get too many at a time ... and if shes concerned then she can always go see a naturalist ! =]

    good luck!

  7. It can be dangerous. You can have the injections more spaced out than normal but your child should still get them. There has been the largest outbreak of measles in 10 years recently. About 15 states are infected. All children who have gotten sick (about 110 kids) are kids who did not receive the MMR vaccine.

  8. my sister friend had her daughter..she  took her child to get shots...well now the child is gosh i forgot the word....jim carey the actor girfriend child has it..yeah autism...i heard that shots can cause autism

  9. Nope!

  10. There is the potential for harm seeing how these vaccines are made.  They do NOT all prevent disease.  If they did, why do children actually get the chicken pox.  Why was small pox and other diseases practically eliminated BEFORE the vaccines were out there.  Why are the Amish not prone to Autism.  Follow the money trail and see who benefits the most from your children being vaccinated.

You obviously have the make the decision for yourself, but do your research.  For instance, there are only a had full of states that actually REQUIRE vaccines to attend school.  The wording is done in such a way that you feel it is required but in fact there are exemptions.  School Administrator aren't even aware of this.  Religious belief an exception.

Did you know that some vaccines were made with aborted babies.  The Hepatitis-A vaccine containing MRC-5 is obtained from human babies that were electively aborted.  WI-38 was created from the tissue of an aborted fetus and is used for the rubella portion of the MMR-II vaccine.  RA 273 was created from the tissue of an aborted fetus, and is used for MMR-II vaccine.  The Chickenpox (Varivax) vaccine contains MRC-5 and RA 273.  Many Pro-lifers might have a moral issue with this.

According to the Merck pharmaceutical package insert for  information on Vitamin K shots, fatalities are an adverse reaction.  See the FDA site listed below.

Bottom line... there is no dumb question - EVER.  Do YOUR OWN research - then decide.
