There was nothing to melt or catch fire but do you think it could have started on fire eventually or not?

  1. Yes.

  2. I have heard of such cases from other firefighters though I have never came across it myself. But I do know that a oven burner left on can be an ignition point for gasses built up in a home or can even ignite grease and oils on a range hood, in you stove top, or on the wall

  3. Yes, it is possible.

Electric stoves heat an element, which in turn transfers heat to your pot or pan by conduction.

Without a pot or pan on the element, the heat will be dissipated by convection (transfer of the heat to the air) and by radiation (electromagnetic waves that transfer through the air from one surface to another).  Depending on what is near the stove, radiation could heat another item to its flash point.  Possible, but not likely.

  4. it might also cost you heaps on electricity

  5. no but you wasted allot of energy.
