Can lemon trees turn into mandarin trees?

  1. We had a large lime tree, gave us beautiful limes for a couple of years (we only moved in 2 years ago) then it got sick and died.  We cut the tree down leaving a stump about 8 inches high.   After a while it sprouted branches from the sides of what was left of the trunk, and now, 2 years later it is a mandarin tree.   I can't explain it and i didn't believe it until i ate the mandarins
