  1. From personal experience I KNOW:

if lightning strikes your home and runs through your electrical outlets, any and all electrical devices can be fried.

And in that situation "surge" protectors don't help.

A "surge" protector only helps when there is

what is called a "brown-outage"...that's when the power gets bumped up from nearby electrical lightning activity.

BUT a direct hit, as I experienced is far greater than a surge.  The bolt jumped from my pine tree, over to my screen, and into the outlet on the porch, and went all through my home.

I lost, TV, washing machine, toasters, VCR, and all other electrical components that were plugged in, INCLUDING the surge protectors!

Solution:  If the electrical storm is nearby UNPLUG any and all things you want to save, until the storm is past.

Most insurance companies would do insure a portion of your components...but that doesn't help when your hard drive is fried, and you lose all your work.

For minor electrical storms:  Use a surge protector.

    For closer electrical storms:  UNPLUG!

Turn them off during a lightning storm. Or go and buy a surge protector. They aren't theat expensive and they are designed to prevent damage to your system from any kind of electrical surge.
