  1. Yes, we actually do this quite frequently to analyze the chemical makeup of rocks.  We melt down a powder of a rock although with a flux to lower its melting point, and cool it quickly to form a glass which is then analyzed.  You can melt rocks without a flux and that is done experimental geochemists.  They will melt rocks and cool them slowly to see what minerals precipitate out at different temperatures.


  2. It needs to be a lot hotter than steel, but in theory yes...

    [Edit], Sorry it doesn't need to be much hotter than steel.  Melting point of most magmas is in the range 700°C to 1300°C
