Can mascara expire BEFORE being opened?

I just bought a new Rimmel tube of mascara from Wal-Mart. When I went to use it, it was really thick, gummy, and difficult to apply. There is no date or printed code on the packaging or anything. Has this happened to anyone else? Is it even possible for mascara to spoil before it's been opened? Thanks.

Yes its possible especially from wal-mart.  They tend to keep old merchandise on the shelves meaning that you could get a tube of mascara that is like a year old.  Take it back and tell them its old and gross and tell them you want a new one.

yes it can, but it will last longer than when you open it. because when you open it, bacteria gets inside and stays in there. once you open a mascara, it will be good for three months. if you use  it longer than three months, you might get an eye infection.

that happened to me before. if you cant apply it, most likely you got a bad one out of the batch. exchange it for a different brand just in case it could be the brand.

yes, it could be an old product from who knows when. especially if you got it on sale. or rimmel might just be a bad brand, ive never used it before so i dont know.

Well rimmel isnt really the best make up brand, as far as i know they dont. try switching brands

gf of mine had some, really old crusty stuff, all makeup apparently can get real old and become worthless. Let the buyer beware.

It may not be out of date, but could have been kept at bad temperatures in the shop.

Like many people said before, it's probably because of the temperature the mascara's kept in at the store. A store like Wal-Mart also stocks in huge amounts, which means your mascara could've been manufactured 2 years ago. My advice is to go to local drugstores and watch for BOGO sales, that way you can get two mascaras for a great price and usually better quality. I recommend CoverGirl or Maybelline for a mascara brand.

Yes, This can cause conjuctuntivitis.  Eye infection.  Sometimes it spoils on the delivery Truck.  Take it back to walmart.  Get another one.

yes, it can happen.  You can take it back if you have a receipt.  It's probably a bad batch more than expired.  Always ave your receipts for makeup or anything else.  I always buy from Walgreen's or Sephora because they return anything if it's bad or even if you just don't like it.  I have never had a problem returning.  I like some of Rimmels mascaras I like the one with the comb on it it works really well. PS if you don't have the receipt from walmart they will give you the lowest price it has ever been sold for.  They've done it to me before.  I wasn't happy at all.  Hopefully they will give you full price for a trade.
