I have a 23 year old arabian gelding (grey) and I noticed a day ago a lump in the area of the sheath about the size of a large cherry tomato. Can Melonoma show up in this area so big ? I did call my vet Saturday but haven't heard back yet. I will try Monday morning again.

  1. It is also possible that it could be a "bean" which is basically hardened "debris" that can accumulate inside the sheath.  Do you clean his sheath and p***s routinely?  The build up of smegma  and other items could form into this hardened bean, mushroom or "debris".

Did you notice this growth from the outside of the sheath...or from the inside?  How often do you clean his sheath and other "contents"?  Does he have difficulty urinating...or show signs of distress when peeing?  If so, it might be what I have mentioned and needs to be removed.  It does not require surgery per se...just softening and lubrication with KY and your hand to release it.

If you don't have experience with this or are squeemish about performing the "procedure"...check with you vet or with some one that has experience with geldings or stallions and the hygiene required for them.

I'm hoping that this, being the lesser of the two evils....is all that it is!!  So, keep your chin up!!  I hope it is just a big mosquito bite!!

    EDIT****************

Just thinking if it could be a an injury or foreign matter that got underneath the skin and is now infected and needs to be lanced?

  2. IT'S PROBABLY FAT, I HAVEN'T YET HEARD OF MELANOMA SHOWING UP LIKE THAT. THE CHANCES ARE SLIM THAT IT IS CANCER. THE CHANCES ARE GOOD THAT IT IS A SWELLING DUE TO BEING KICKED, OR FAT.

  3. yes, it could. So could  (forgive my spelling) squamous cell carcinoma. Don't panic! Melonomas can look pretty big but do little harm.  Does he already have melonoma elsewhere?

I don't suppose it might just be a nasty bug bite?

  4. Yes, melanoma can show up on a horse's sheath. And considering your horse is an older, grey, Arabian, the chances of it being melanoma are higher than most horses. Definitely try to get the vet out. Here some more info: http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content...
