I had a disput with a merchant. After that I noticed him read a number from my recepit. I used my credit card in his store. I wonder if he can track my credit card, my name, and then the billing address which is my home address.

He seems want to use that number to do something.

  1. With all of the identity theft and credit card fraud there is out there right now, merchants are taking big steps to insure their employees do not have access to sensitive customer information.

First, only the last 4 digits of your credit card number would show up on the receipt.  This is the first precaution, and first sign that you likely do not have anything to worry about.  There's nothing anyone can do with just those 4 digits; it's simply for reference.

Second, if you're thinking the merchant may have looked up your purchase in the system, found your whole credit card number and looked up your billing address from there, that's also not possible.  Back to my original point, companies are taking more and more precautions against theft, thus they prevent even their employees from seeing the whole credit card number even in the system.

For him to call the credit card company with your first and last name and try to request the address connected to the account would be completely ridiculous.  No credit card company would be giving out that information, even to a merchant.

If you feel the dispute you had with the merchant aggravated him enough that he may try to seek revenge, even if it sounds silly, file a report with the police.  Filing a report doesn't necessarily mean they'd be taking any sort of action against him right now-- it's just sometimes good to put things on the record.  If somehow he got angry enough, and was a big enough sleezebag and say, your tires were slashed while parked outside his store-- you'd already have a report filed with the police which could help in a case against him.

AGAIN, it's highly unlikely he'd try to seek revenge.  Customers p**s off employees, and likewise, all day, everyday.  It just happens.  You can breathe! =)

  2. No your credit card company doesn't give out your info and that's the only place he would be able to get your info from.

When a customer disputes a charge on thier card through thier credit card company the credit card company doesn't even tell them the customers name they just give the date and amount of the sale.
