From what folktales say, yes. Merfolk (depending on the culture) see their realm as we do ours. For instance in the legend of the soul cages, the merman actually had a nice little house beneath the sea. Likewise, many merfolk are attached to specific deities (Neptune/Posiedon, Mc Mannan Mac Lyr. And as a creature representing that element, it's unlikely that they would have any problem with it.  Scientifically, Hump-back whales have eyes, and dive to enourmous depths.Chances are though, the deeper they go, the less they depend on them and use more echo-location. And the ocean deeps are filled with incredible phosphorescent creatures--just made for viewing....hopefully....by merfolk!
