Question:

Can mice interbreed with rats? Why or why not?

I know that a lion and a tiger can interbreed....so it made me wonder.

  1. No, they are seperate genus and species.

    Lions and tigers are the same genus: panthera.

    Mice and rats are different genus': mus and rattus.

    Most animals can hybridize if they are the same on the genus level.

    Scientists have tried to crossbreed mice and rats and the embryo died before the very first cell could multiply more than a few times.

  3. No, lions and tigers are more similar then rats are to mice.  Mice are smaller.  Lions and tigrs are about the same size

    I wouldn't put them in the same cage, let alone mating them...
