Can money I received for financial aid for college be used to buy a laptop?

So here's the thing:

I'm starting college in around 3 weeks. I applied for financial aid and received a Pell Grant for $2,366/$2,365 for the fall/spring respectively, a Cal B Grant for $776/$775, and a BOGW for $274/$274.

I know that the BOGW is used for registration fees only, but what about the others? I have already paid for my classes and books and registration, and it ended up coming to around $600, which leaves almost or around $2,500 left over. Would I be allowed to use this money to purchase a laptop for college or no?

  1. After your classes and fees are paid for the college should cut you a check for the balance of what is left to help you cover your expenses.  if that means you use it to pay for your new laptop for classes then that's what you may use it for.

  2. Your own computer is absolutely essential and will save you alot of head-aches... I've seen what happens when people don't have one.

  3. You can use the money for anything that applies to your education. Meaning, tuition, books, supplies, room and board etc,.

  4. Yes you can, that sort of thing is what the pell grant can be used on.
