Can mud puppies live in a northeastern?

there is a local river right down the streat from me. there is a long snake like animal that swims up and down the river. ive seen it at one end of the river and i have seen it at several places in between the original spot i saw it and a spot about 2 miles down from that. i see it all the time at this new spot and ive even seen it up close about 1 foot away from me. people have told me that its a mud puppie but i didnt think they could servive in CT. anyone have an idea of what it could be?

I don't think it's a mud puppy. There's an amphibian called the Greater Siren that is found as far north as Washington D.C. Maybe your mystery animal is some type of siren.
