Can my amp affect the performance of my car?

I've had to get a new alternator and battery back in Decemeber but that was b/c I used to play the music without the car running. I noticed my car is "acting up" a bit and I know I'm due for some maintenace as soon as I can afford it. In the meanwhile I'm wondering if it's ok to still drive with my amp turned on, or does it even make a difference?

  1. the amp simply being on should not make a difference. depending on the wattage of the amp (rms) if its under 800w, you should have no problems with your stock electrical system.

  2. It depends on the ampage of your amplifier. If you had to replace the alternator from burning it out with the amp before, I would recommend disconnecting it for now. It sounds like you need a farad capacitor. This stores additional power for the amp to run off of so that it doesn't kill your alternator.

  3. it can kill your alternator if it is pulling too much power.

  4. no it shouldnt.... did you get it installed or did you do it.. wires could be messed up if you installed it.. but it shouldnt..
