Question:

Can my battery recharge itself?

Last night, I left the little light on in my car, I got up this morning and the car wouldn't turnover, I just get this clicking noise. All the lights come on, so if I leave it for a while, will I eventually be able to start it?

  1. Probably not. You see. Your battery and alternator work as a team. They keep each other charged. You can, however possibly try to jump start your car and hope that the alternator recharges your battery, but no, a battery does not recharge itself.

  2. A lead acid battery in optimum (new) condition may 'come back up' slightly (on chemical reaction alone) if it has not totally discharged overnight. This is very rare and it may not come up enough to engage the starter. I have only had this happen once but that was from over cranking an engine that wasn't going to start anyway. There were other issues involved. But after leaving the car off for 10 minuted I did get it to crank over 2 or 3 more times. That is hard on a battery though. Best thing is to charge the battery back up before attempting to start the vehicle.

  3. Send your battery for a recharge to restore to fully charge state. May take a few hours. If your battery is more than 3 years, replace it with a new battery.

The battery is charge by the electricity provided by the generator (alternator) when the engine is working. battery is unable to recharge itself.

    :-)

  4. In short, NO.  Even if you lights still come on doesn't mean the battery isn't dead, it takes more power to start the car than turn on the lights.  If you have a trickle charger, put it on the battery overnight. If the battery has dead plates inside , it won't take a charge if it does take a charge, you just saved yourself about 70.00
