Is it legal in California?

I took an hourly job and after working for 1 and 1/2 years I decided to take a vacation and requested time off. He asked me where I was going, I said South America for 2 weeks.

next day, while I was around he told other employees that how come someone (Me) who made $$ a week could afford a trip to South America.

he did not tell my hourly rate but he said the amount I make a week.

  1. He can but it isn't really ethical or professional.

  2. Yep, it's perfectly legal to talk about how much you make.  Although it is kinda rude.  Maybe he was trying to keep others from askin for raises or somethin and your salary is kinda low for the position.  But that's just a conspiracy theory only barely based in reality.LOL

  3. yes, but most would call it jackass behavior.

  4. check your employee manual, I am almost certain that it is against company policy. If it is, report him to Human Resources...

  5. It is not legal, eithical or professional.

BUT - do you want to loose your job over it or have to come to work daily to a hostile environment???  Your boss needs some serious retraining in ethics and professionalism.

Go on your fantastic vacation and let him eat his jealous little heart out over it.....your best revenge is to enjoy your trip and retunr to work, giving the company your best, until you can leave to go on another awesome trip   :)

  6. Yes.Salary schedules are public information in many companies. However, it was very unprofessional for him to do this. It only made him sound petty and small. Just smile and if asked about it tell people you consider it off limits to discuss personal finances in the workplace.

  7. He is classless...look for a new job when you get back

  8. not only can he, according to you, he did!

last I checked, California is subject to the 1st Amendment, so unless you have a contract otherwise, he can say whatever he wants.

I do agree on the professionalism part of it though. But I am sure he is making only 50 cents an hour more then you, so he is just jealous, not a professional in any sense.
