Can my boss withhold my check weekly for Fridays when it is dated for Thursdays?

Our checks are dated for Thursdays and until recently we were able to pick them up on Wednesdays but not cash them until Thursdays. Now the agency wont give them to us until Friday.

If the check was dated for Friday, it wouldn't bother me, but it says Thursday on the check!

It might be a problem of logistics, whoever prints them, and what delivery service brings them to you. Maybe they are taking time to double check them before letting them go?  Inquire if Direct Deposit is available.. The money is instantly in your account.Even when the paper checks come late.

do you have an employee handbook that tells paydays ?  

in California the company must establish regular paydays and pay accordingly. The paydays can be changed.

The date on the check isn't important.  

Your state has its own rules.

Yes, if they have payday set up for Fridays they can write the check for Monday and it wouldn't matter. You may want them to direct deposit the check in your account if you need the money faster, a lot of employers prefer that because they don't have to spend money on checks.
