Can my brother have a root canal whilst wearing braces?

he gets his braces(upper arch only) next thursday...he's also due to have a root canal on his upper right pre-molar in september..i've advised him to postpone the root canal as he only expects to have the braces on for 6-9 months..

i fear that if anything were to go wrong with the root canal, it might mess up his ortho..treatment....

  1. Don't listen to me or any random advice here for this simple one.

Your bro is paying big bucks for ortho-d, so he should ask the ortho-d the question.  He will definitely want to know about any other dental work going on.  This should have come up in the pre-exam, theyre supposed to know about your overall dental health.  He's owed plenty of answers, so shouldn't be shy about asking.

Is you're brother reluctant to ask for some reason?  He's paying money for both procedures, and he'll be the one suffering if something goes wrong, so ask!!!

  2. He should have the root canal done first.

If the tooth needs root filling then delaying it is only asking for trouble.  A dead tooth will eventually get infected and an abscess will form.  this tooth  may  flare up while he is undergoing the ortho.

Nothing will go wrong with the root canal - and it is best to do ortho on sound teeth.

If anything goes wrong with the tooth after the ortho - it will definitely mess things up!

Sorry - i miss read this question - you can certainly carry out root canal while having ortho - just don't delay it.

  3. Yes, actually it is highly recommended..................Wouldn't you just die if his trousers fell down half way through his root canal???

  4. No problem with having a root canal done while in braces. May save him some pain and infection. Not advised to wait on a root canal, as it is only done when there is an infection or chance of infection.

If the root canal does not work, the tooth may need to be removed-but possibly the braces can reposition the teeth to accommodate the space. Don't worry- the root canal specialist will contact the orthodontist if there is a problem.
