Can my cat sense when I am upset or sick?

Question

A couple of days ago, I was crying and my cat was just staring at me very attentively and his eyes looked wide and sad. A few months back when I was in bed with a bad cold, he stayed with me in my bedroom the whole night. He usually likes to hang out in the hallway or kitchen of my apartment. So...can cats really understand our emotions and empathize?

YES , many people do not realize but cat's are our protector's . alot of people even consider them as our familiers ( guides) they ae very brilliant and do know and sense these things , youll notice if you cry or yell they come near you more and nudge alot when they nudge they are "claiming"you by rubbing there scent on you its also how they let you know they are there for you  .http://www.touregypt.net/magazine/mag040...

yes he can, and so can a dog.  your pets can sense your emotions and understand when you need companionship.

Yes. Cats are very sensitive to our moods and feelings. The Chinese actually used to use cats to predict natural disasters. Anyway, my cat is always hanging around when I'm upset and staring at me. Some cats however do not have such a strong bond with their owner. You must have a strong relationship with your cat :)

There is no way we can truly know if animals sense our feelings. If you have a cat that is affectionate all the time like two of mine are then it is harder to tell. My third cat Koro is very seclusive most of the time, she always comes to me when I am upset or if I am mad she will lay in front of me until I pet her.

I think animals in general when they have a bond with their humans can sense changes in their humans' mood.

Cats are smarter than we give them credit for, I have 3 and they can sense when something is wrong, or when we're upset or what ever.

Cats and dogs both can, I think they can hear your body vibrations or something so they can   hear when it changes, and when your voice changes cause they don't hear the good vibes in your voice so they know something is wrong.

I truly think a cat can sense those kind of things. I don't have any scientific explanation about it but I know whenever I cry, my cat comes and rubs against my back or purrs even without me petting him back. And when I'm sick he almost never leaves my side. My dad used to always say that a cat stays with you when your sick so they can try and take your sickness away :]

I think they can sense when things aren't normal, for instance if you don't get up at your usual time or you seem different. My housemate's cat seemed to sense I wasn't usual self when my cat died last year (they weren't living together). And if I don't get up at my usual time Dexter (my housemate's cat) comes into my room or scratches at the door. I don't know about emphasizing though... They're probably more worried we won't get up to feed them!!! haha!

If you have a close bond i think yea!

I have a 4 month old kitten, when i hit my little brother, because we were playing my kitty was sleeping across the bed, then when my brother went crying on the other side, the kitty  woke up and came next to him, started like sniffing him and laid down next to him. The next day I pretended to cry and he came too! :D

yes they do they worried about you easily they say like (hey whats wrong don't cry I'm here just tell me ur problems and let it all out)

Cats will only care about being around you if you feed them and take care of them... once they see that your not feeding them or taking care of them, they leave... that's their natural way of living.. Their cats...
