  1. yes keep them apart!

  2. Sometimes mites are species specific, but most often they are not and your chinchilla can get them.

I wouldn't take any unnecessary risks. Keep them in separate rooms (preferably separate floors), make sure to wash your hands after handling the mice, and even change clothes, clean the cages with a bleach/water solution and clean & vacuum everything, and get them all treated. Mites are mobile, so your chinchilla still may get them and should also be treated.

  3. Yes, and they will get all over the house as well. So you need to treat all of your furry and even feathery pets and make sure that you clean all cages. You will also need to vaccuum all floors and furniture and wash any clothes that have come in contact with them. Also do your bedding if you have been on your bed even once since touching them. Try to do all of the cleaning at once because if mite eggs are left on even one surface, then the house will become reinfested. You have to treat it as if someone in the house had lice or if a pet brought fleas into the house. It's just as bad.

I know it's annoying, but if you follow my advice, you will get rid of those little pests. I hope this helps. Good luck.

  4. Yes, mites are very contagious. They can transfer via the carpet, your clothes, etc.  If one animal in a house has mites, you have to treat all of them.
