Question:

Can my doctor force me to do anything?

I know that's a strange question but my doctor has been a friend of the family for many years and I don't want to upset her. I realize that she's only worried about me but when she found out that I had started smoking (and don't give me c**p about that) her exact words were "I'm going to see you again in three months and if you haven't quit on your own by then I'm going to put you on prescription". I don't want to tell her off but she can't prescribe me something I didn't agree to can she?

I'm having a similar problem with my diet. I am at quite a healthy weight and am quite healthy but she says that if I keep eating macaroni and cheese and Ramen noodles then she's going to prescribe me a diet.

Seriously, what do I do?

  1. She can recommend and give you a prescription, she can't make you take it though.  Forcing you to take medication can only be done if you are a threat to yourself or others, such as a violent schizophrenic- who can be forced by court order to take the medication or be remanded to a psychiatric hospital.  However, if you are young enough to be smoking and feeling defensive about it, and living on a diet of noodles- chances are you are still a minor.  In that case, the doctor can't force you- but your parents can certainly try.  If you are above 18, as long as you are not a threat to anyone but yourself, you are free to live as you please.

  2. A doctor can't force you to do anything.

  3. just take the prescription and say thank you then after you leave throw it away but if you can stop smoking then do it you wast allot of money on cig's trust me ive been smoking for 10 years i wished i could stop

  4. Find another DR. You need to feel safe, understood, and have confidence in your DR. I'm afraid if you tell her to back off it may create an uncomfortable relationship. You need to do what's right for YOU. Good luck :)

  5. Hello! Your doctor cannot make you do anything you don't want to do! Get another doctor. This one doesn't seem to be working out for you. PS--friends of the family doctors don't always work out. Nice if you have a great relationship with them but this one sounds bossy and totally not understanding of you.

  6. She can't force you to do anything and if you don't wanna be mean let her prescribe you something and don't get it filled so then you won't hurt her feelings
