My dog got it's shots today, (August 18, 2008.) Can she get them again in April of 2009 or would that be harmful to her?

I'm asking cause normally I take her to this free vaccine clinic but this year I paid to have her shots but next year i want to do it at the free clinic but it's in April..... If I wait till August then they won't be free.

  1. Since she got a one year rabies shot, then it would be important to get it again in a year.  This protects you and your dog since you can lose a dog that is not current on shots, not to mention possibly getting fined severely.  But next year, it would be better for your dog if you get her the three year shots.

As far as the other shots, unless you are checking her blood regularly, you can't be sure about how long the immunity a shot affords, will last.

I get my dogs the three year rabies shots and after their shot series as pups and then their next year booster,  I started to get their DHLP/P shots every two years.

As far as bordatella goes, they got that as pups but not since then as I do not board them.

There are different preferences on this subject, but there is a to vaccine related illnesses with yearly shots.

  2. Yes she should still be able to

  3. Over-vaccination has the potential of causing problems.  You have a whole year to put aside a few dollars every week for vaccinations, some of which are now every 3 years instead of annually.  Call your vet, ask what vaccines are due next year, and what the estimated cost will be.  Then save towards that amount, every month.    While free clinics have their purpose, most times it is to your and your dog's advantage to go to a vet every year that knows your dog.

ADD:  after the initial set of puppy boosters, DHPP and the Rabies vaccine are given again in one year.   After those vaccines, DHPP and Rabies are both 3 year vaccines.  So the vaccines your dog got today, should not be due again until 2011--if your dog got her initial rabies vaccine at about 16 weeks.  Call your vet where you just got her vaccinated, and ask when they are next due.

How old is your dog, did she complete all her puppy boosters by 16 weeks?

your dog does not need to have shots again..

rabies is every three years,,,, period!!

  5. What shots are you talking about? If you are speaking of the distemper combo and she has had them before you do not need to get them for another 3 yrs. That is the new protocol .Helpful link: http://www.canismajor.com/dog/vacci01.ht...  Added: The one yr rabies need to be repeated in a yr and then you can go every three years.I think the 8 month  spacing will be fine. You are basically giving a booster shot. The DHPP is the distemper combo shot.

  6. Yes she can have them again in April. It will not hurt her.

  7. Routine vaccinations are dangerous enough when done properly.  If you get extras, you're asking for trouble.  Any time you over-stimulate the immune system, you're taking a risk.  Take a good look at this site:  http://www.earthclinic.com/Pets/vaccinat...
