that I'm leaving soon? I'm in my 3rd year at university (I'm 20) & my parents are driving me up this Saturday, I'm pretty close to her (she's a black lab/Greyhound mix) & we go on walks, I play w/ her & give her treats, basically I'm like the cool "Aunt" or "big sister" lol.

Anyway, I've been telling her that "I'm gonna go now" & her eyes get all big & sad & she's been coming over to me repeatedly while I'm on the computer & puts her head on my lap & looks up @ me w/ those big puppy eyes? She's only 2 & very smart, could she know that I'm leaving soon?

Not to mention: every time I come home, she starts crying & jumping around me.

  1. when you are sad that you are leaving your puppy it knows because of your mood you are in.

  2. Yes I do think dogs can sense.  Most are aware of their surroundings, and if you are doing things that you normally don't do, like packing and leaving things around..then yes that is different to a dog.  And if you are acting funny, and sad, and stressed out, your dog will again sense it.  So of course she does not know you are going back to school, she will and does realize that things are not right in her pod.  And good luck with school..and when she is crying and jumping she is happy.  Just make sure when you leave this time....do not make a fuss and just leave like you always do, don't cry all over her or mope....as then she will really know  that something is going on...just hug and kiss her and then leave.  Hard to do, but you should.

  3. if you are close to your animal they know.  my gf is from Canada and makes trips that typically last a week long.  our puppy just turned 9 months and every time we get back from dropping her off at the airport he usually mopps around and doesn't eat for a day because he knows she's gone.

  4. I agree that she can sense something is going on.  Dogs can also have separation anxiety, so she may have a hard time when you leave.  It will be important for someone else in the house to start picking up some of your daily activites with her, to help ease her into a new routine before you leave.

  5. To add to the answer about moods, they also notice when routines are different.  Are you packing and do you have a lot of unfamilar things around your room?

  6. I doubt it. When you come home she is just sad that you left the house, its like saying. "why'd you leave me here?"

When you're on the computer she just wants to play so its like asking,

"stop playing with the box thing, play with me!"

and when you tell her, "im gonna go now" do you walk away? It could be a signal to her that you're going to stop playing or are going to walk away.

  7. Dogs sense your moods, so they react to your moods.  They are happy when you are happy, and they are sad when you are sad.  I am sure she knows something is up by your moods.

  8. Of course it knows you did tell her.
