Can my dwarf hamster really chew through her cage?

I have the habitrail ovo for my 2 female dwarf hamsters. Yesterday one of them starting chewing on the lines of the tubes...will she be able to chew all the way through? So far it doesn't seem like she's making any progress. Any suggestions on how to get her to stop?

  1. I've had a very similar problem. Alot of people just said it's normal. But my previous hamster never did.

i let my hamster run about in his ball for a while, placed a chew stick (its a seeds stick similar to ones buggies have) and placed a small cardboard box with little treats. He can smell the treats and concentrates on chewing the box to get them. I've used alittle bit of Vaseline  in the area Riley chews and my hamster has seemed to stop.

Must admit its only been the one night. but it worked!

  2. the dwalf hammies are a pain lol for that kinda thing as i have had a few you should be able to go to ur pet store and pick up a spray that is safe for them. You just spray it onto the bits that you would like your hammies to stop chewing and its ment to be a nasty tast its not cruel its just helping them to learn what they are and are not allowed to chew i got some for my hammies cage too it works. hope this will help u.

  3. yes i had hamster when i was young and they chewed through every single type of cage. I even put them in a bird cage (metal) and they still found ways out.

thats their whole point of living...

    to get out.

    good luck!

  4. she could chew through.  You probably can't make her stop.

  5. More likly than not

    your hamster will NOT

    chew through it's cage.

However they do chew the cage sometimes

to keep their teeth at the proper size.

Put a wood chew in there,

so she/he has something other than her cage to chew on.

    But don't worry.

I have never had/heard about a hamster chewing through the bars on a cage.

  6. I don't think so. I also have a dwarf hamster, and he bites the bars on his cage ALL THE TIME! But he wont get through. And i also have a habitrail cage. But Hamsters need to bite to shorten their teeth, or they wont be able to eat, but you can buy them salt blocks to bite on , or go to a pet store, and they usually have some stuff that you can buy for hamsters to bite on, but they need to bite sometimes! But when my hamster bites we give him a tissue and that keeps him occupied for a while.

  7. The issue is not whether she will succeed, but rather that plastic is not good for her, and she does ingest some as she gnaws away.  Give her hard woods and dog biscuits upon which to chew.  If she likes to be held then pick her up only at times she is NOT chewing.   If she does not like to be held, then pick her up  every time she chews.
