Can my fiance legally force me to give back my engagement ring if we broke up?

My fiance and I recently broke up but got back together shortly after wards. We have been arguing now about if we were to split up again whether or not I would have to give him back my engagement ring. I said I wouldn't give it back and he said he'd take me to small claims court if I didn't because it was quite costly. Would he be able to get it back?

I broke my engagement twice...My finacee at that time gave me many expensive gifts, like paying off my mortgage and a car...Never once did he ask for it back, but now he wants to sue me.  I recieved a letter from his lawyer saying that these things were give on a condition of marriage, but they were not.
