Question:

Can my fish tank hang off the surface a little bit?

I just got a new tank for my turtle, and I put it on my dresser until I get a stand for it. The tank is a little bigger than my dresser, it hangs over the front about 1/2 inch, and about 1 inch in the back. It fits lengthwise, but I was just wondering if I should empty the tank until I get a stand that is the same size as the tank. Thanks.

  1. yeah i think it will be ok

as long you keep the weight on the back were it is on a good surface

  2. I read the other answers, and I'm going to be the dissenter here.

Look at an aquarium stand sometime: the middle might have a support board in the center to keep the unit from twisting, but otherwise, the middle of the top is usually absent. This is partially to compensate for the fact that materials warp and expand in different temperatures and humidities throughout the year, but more because the middle of the tank isn't where your worries will come in.

Think about water pressing against a tank: the walls have to hold up against that pressure, and much of that pressure is directed down due to gravity. What this means is that the bottom of the tank along the walls receives the greatest amount of force. If these areas are supported less than the middle, the sheering forces will create stress cracks over time. Depending on the size of the tank, the thickness of the walls, and the material the tank is made out of, it probably won't be a day or a week, but it will happen eventually.

I'd keep the tank less than full for now and get a proper stand as quickly as you're able to find one.

  3. It would be best to place a board or other solid surface that's larger than the tank on the dresser, then place the tank on it.

Keep in mind that the greatest amount of support for a tank is the corners, and if they aren't well supported, then the tank's structure is compromised.  Or something like that.

Lose at least half the water.

  4. Youll be fine thats no problem.

  5. Sometimes it can cause crackes because of the pressure and make a leak because of the weak point, but then again at all depends on the size of the tank , shape and how much of it is off of the surface.!

  6. It should be fine, but if you want to ensure that your turtle(s) are safe, then I'd put something solid under to support it unless you get a very good deal on a stand for the tank size.

  7. It sounds like it should be just fine.  As long as the dresser is plenty sturdy enough to support it, it shouldn't be a problem.  Enjoy your turtle!
