My husband was diagnosed with bipolar disorder a couple years ago. He hasn't taken his meds for about a year because they make him too drowsy. He has enlisted in the Marine's and goes to boot camp in October. #1, why was he allowed to enlist? #2, when they did the physical and health exam, wouldn't these records also be in his medical history?? ps. he didn't disclose freely that he was diagnosed, but the recruiter basically told him to not even say he gets headaches because they will deny him at the physical.

  1. I have been faced with this problem as well, in this case it is best to tell the higher ups. Bipolar disorder is an obstical that some have to face in life. Bootcamp... well honestly that is an obstical that can break "Healthy" men and women. People with cases of bipolar disorder have an increased risk of really aggressive PTSD. It could crush him and honestly, it might not be the right choice. On the other hand it might work out fine, my grandfather had Bipolar Disorder and served for 12 years and won several metals. It depends on the person.

P.S.: To some of the posters. When it comes to bipolar disorder, like any other disease, it can be maintained. Judging some one just because they have an obstical in their life is as assanine as judging some one by the color of their skin. thank you.
