Question:

Can my landlord do this?

I live in federally funded low income housing. Last month, my landlord over charged me by $104.00. Two weeks later, they sent me a check for $104. For August's rent, I got a rent voucher that is $100 less then what they should charge me for this months rent.

Since it was there mistake, they're OVERSIGHT, can they come back at me later on that I didn't pay the right amount of rent?

  1. When they find there mistake they can make you pay the $100 but they can not charge you late fee

  2. In my experience, any money the government gives as a mistake they usually catch. Things such as taxes, unemployment, etc. If they overpay you, you will be held responsible to pay it back. The government doesn't care if they made a mistake. They will make it right at your expense. I would call someone and confirm that this is the actual amount that you need to pay, and if not let them know the mistake. I know that being proud of yourself for being a good, honest citizen might not feel as good as having an extra $100, but it still is the right thing to do, and you won't end up having to come up with the money down the road after you have already spent it and they are asking for it back. Play it safe and call whoever is in charge of your rent situation.

  3. Talk to the administration on this.  It looks like a mistake.

  4. Most likely since it is the federal government.  You're already on low income, may as well let them know and pay the whole thing...

  5. nope. it was there mistake and can not come back on you.
