Question:

Can my lazy step-daughter stay in Australia?

Shes an "Artist" which makes her ineligible to join America's work force and be a productive member of society. Some guy in Australia sent her a plane ticket and enough money for a passport. Shes there now and shes fine, but i doubt she'll get a job even to stay there. How long can she stay in Australia as a tourist (she has a return ticket)? With obtaining a work visa out of the question, what else can she do to continue her stay in Australia? Anyway she can get citizenship? Thanks mates!

  1. If she is under 30 years of age, she can apply for a work visa for 1 year only.  Applying to immigrate can be difficult.  They have a points system.  The more highly educated and wealthy you  are the more points you get.  Otherwise you need to have a skill that we are short of here (some medical, some trades, miners).  The only other way would be for her to marry an Australian but even then you have to prove you have really been together for some time.

If she overstays her tourist visa they can deport her and she will not be allowed back in.  Some people go to say New Zealand and reapply for another tourist visa and re-enter.   It sounds a lot like it will really be up to how this relationship with this guy goes.  Maybe you are lucky this nice Aussie bloke has taken her off your hands!

  2. she can only stay 3 months on a tourist visa and can NOT work when she is there

she would have to apply to immigrate and only being an artist i dont like her chances

you need to be a skilled worker to immigrate to australia

  3. I believe most visitor visas are for 3 months but if she applied for a work visa I'm not sure how long that would be. She would only be offered citizenship after 2 years of being a permanent resident so she has to apply for that first.

  4. Okkies becoming a citizen take thousounds as my american husband had to do this, well he is only a permant resident. And it takes ages and lots of forms. Also you have to have immediate family, a spouse or have some kind of skill australia wants (which i'm sorry to say an artist doesnt count). Even with my husband having a strong IT background and being a husband to an aussie it was hard and we needed to get a lawyer.

Now she can stay illegally or she can get her visitors vista lengthened. Visitors visa are ussually 3 months, but can get extended to up to a year. But you do have to have reasons for this and enough money in your bank account to prove that she wont work illegally. She needs to have a few thousand ussually but theres always exeptions to the rule.

  6. The Work and Holiday Visa (which Liz down Under refers to) is probably her best bet, however she'll need to leave Australia to apply for it, as it can only be granted offshore.

It is open to Americans aged 18-30 who have completed a tertiary degree, and can be applied for online. It allows the holder to enter Australia for a 12 month period, and take up temporary employment.  You can get the full details on the Department of Immigration's web site at http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/working-...

This is a relatively new visa, as the agreement for it was just signed during the APEC conference in September 2007.
