Can my lcd tv power external speakers? two left and right or do I need a receiver?

It depends on the lcd tv. If it has speaker outputs, usually black and red plastic spring-loaded terminals for connecting speaker wires, then you're good to go.

Some lcd tvs have audio ouputs so you can switch all of your sources through the tv, but they don't have an audio amplifier built-in. If this is the case, you would have RCA connectors labeled L & R out or something to that effect.

Some tv's have both options... post your tv model number and I'll tell you for sure!

You would need a receiver unless you purchased some powered (i.e. active) speakers with their own built-in amplifiers.
