Can my manager deduct money from my paycheck if my register is short?

I work at Sonic and we do not count our OWN drawers before use. We also do not initial anything saying that we sat with our manager when the drawer was being counted in the first place. My register came up exactly 60 dollars short and I was just wondering if they can legally take it out of my check.

I was informed that they can ONLY remove it from my check if I have initialed something stating that I also counted the register prior to use with a witness (ie. manager)

  1. No, they cannot deduct money from your paycheck.  They can write you up or fire you though.

  2. They shouldnt be able to. The only way they can deduct it is if the contract has a portion saying they can and you signed it.

  3. Where are the cameras.....if they cant prove that "you" took it they should come up with better deter ants

  4. no way. if the drawer was not counted before you used it, or if someone else used it while it was under your name then you can not be responsible. who is to say the manager left your float short on purpose or even accident? they should count the safe maybe it'l pop up there. or put cameras in.

they can not take it form you because (unless you took it) it isnt your falut. they need to be better orgnised.

  5. They can't deduct it if they can't prove that you took the money. Does anyone else have access to your drawer? Do they count the money after each shift? They should do a better job of surveillance to avoid complications like that. If you didn't take the money then you have nothing to worry about.

  6. As a manager for Pizza Hut the past 7 years I can tell you that it is illegal for anyone to deduct money or hours from your paycheck. Time worked on the clock may not be taken away from you, for any reason! Sonic should have a very strict policy on cash handling as all corporations do. If it gets even semi-serious contact your BBB (better business bureau). Check the poster on the wall that talks about minimum wage. The same poster talks about it being illegal for your boss to retaliate against you in any way for questioning him or going over his head about a particular situation.

  7. You should be fine, especially if you're a new employee then it's obvious that you're just getting used to cash-handling. This is somewhat common with busy cashier work. Just don't make mistakes consistently.

  8. if You have a contract check to see if Your mangager can do this
