  1. Nope. same as you can' t get pregnant is you haven't started your

    periods yet.

No. The heat or estrus is natures way of allowing the mare to let the stallion know when she is able to conceive.  But there are what breeders call  "sneaky" or "silent" mares, they actually have a hormone in balance and may not be "showing".  When left alone (in the pasture) with the stallion they will breed.  In general, if the mare is not showing she's in heat, wait until she is or have the vet examine her for breeding soundness.

    Mares are fertile for 36 hours prior to the actual start of estrus.  Its a funny thing.  Well not really "fertile" more like things can hang around for that 36 hours in the right environment.  :)  

  8. No to your question, but sometimes they don't "show" quite so obvious and the deed is done before you know that your mare is in heat.
