Question:

Can my mom keep me homeschooled?

I've been talking to my mom about how I want to go to highschool, but she's not compromising at all. I was homeschooled my WHOLE eighth grade year and I HATED it. I've talked to my mom and I'm about to get my dad involved. I've heard rumors that she has to have HIS permission too before I can be homeschooled. Is this true?

  1. That depends on how your parents work things.  Are your parents divorced, and if so, does your mom have full custody?  If she does, then she has the final say.

What did you not like about homeschooling?  Have you talked to your mom about changing some things to make it better?  There are many ways to homeschool, it doesn't have to be done with one certain curriculum or with an online school.

Legally, no.  Your parents do not have to both agree.  This just makes for more peace in the family.  Before you start an all-out war between your parents on this, why don't you see if you can resolve the issue with your mom without it having to be an all-or-nothing?

  2. Laws in the USA have changed. You may no longer home school children unless you have a teaching degree.

  3. It might depend on which state you live in.  Check out this site:

    http://www.hslda.org/laws/default.asp

Click on the state you live in and read about the guidelines that will pertain to you.  I checked my state and it said nothing about needing both parents permission to allow homeschooling.

  4. talk to the school principal and see what the rules are/deal is. let him/her know your concerns and ask for their help. also ask other trustworthy relatives to intervene with your parents on your behalf. this is hostage crisis!!

  5. I don't think it's a good idea to turn  your parents against each other.

Think about the reasons you want to go to public school.  Write them down and have an honest conversation with your mom about it.

Ask her about her concerns and find ways to address them.  Make sure you show yourself to be respectful and responsible.  Ask for a trial period and make sure you know her expectations and that you go above and beyond to meet them.

If your mom decides she will not send you to public school or even let you try it, make the most of homeschooling.  Think about the parts that aren't serving you well, and do what you can to make changes.

Consider joining a co-op or finding other activities.  Here are some suggestions:

If your mom doesn't allow you to go to high school this year, but you remain hardworking and responsible, she may be willing to reexamine her decision or let you try taking classes at a community college

Just a warning - no matter what happens, pitching a fit or acting disrespectful won't get you anywhere.  Be mature about it!

    Good luck!
