Can my niece receive benefits off her father who has been deemed mentally disabled?

He is only 24 years old and he is bipolar and maniac depressive and he has other chemical imbalances as well. He does not pay child support and I need help taking care of her. What do I do?

  3. yes, if the father is on SSI (disability).  Not all people with bipolar and manic depressive qualitfy for disability.  Some can manage with medication and counseling and can work.

  4. Yes she can. her mom will have to do it, unless you are her gaurdian.  It may take a while, but the $ is acumulative, so you will get the backpay from the day you applied. good luck.

  5. I'd consult a lawyer to see about getting benefits for her.  It's wonderful that you're providing a family for her.  I hope it all turns out well for you!

    If you can't find/afford a lawyer, consult with the child welfare department in your state.  Go to http://www.childwelfare.gov/pubs/reslist... to find your state's office contact info.

  6. In the US? Yes, she can. You need only call the SSA with his name and social security number. My children receive a small alottment through MY disability.
