Question:

Can my other rodents (gerbils and rabbit) catch pet rats cold?

I got 2 rats today from someone who ***** take care of them and theyv been living in a tiny travel cage for the last few weeks and iv noticed theyre quite hunched and one has red discharge and the other has sneezed a few times which I no cold be symptoms of a cold which i will go to the vet about, im just wondering if my rabbit or gerbils are at risk of catching it?

  1. Most animals can catch the virus we humans know as the common cold. Be very careful about handling your pets though. If you touch your rats, wash your hand before touching your other animals or other people. But because they are so small, rodents can die from colds severe enough, so take them to the vet immediately.

  2. Certain diseases can. I am not sure if that one can be. To aviod any chance of this happening this what i would do.

    1. Take the rats cage into a different room then the gerbils and rats.

    2. If you touch the rats wash your hands immediatly.

    3. Don't use anything your rat touches with the gerbils and rabbit.

    4. Take the rats to the vet A.S.A.P.
