Do you need to be a US citizen to enter a US embassy or can my wife use her permanent resident card to gain access? She needs to go to the social security office inside the embassy in Santo Domingo and I wont be there with her. In the past, I have had to show my US passport to enter the embassy there and she obviously does not have this.

  1. I thought you needed to be a citizen, but if this is someplace she NEEDS to be then maybe her residency paperwork will be enough. Best thing to do is just call the US Embassy , they will tell you.

    Good luck

  2. Your permanent resident wife does not have open access to the US Embassies or Consulates. This is a right reserved only for US citizens. However, you can call or e-mail the Embassy or Consulate, or for that matter your wife can, and make an appointment to come. As a permanent resident your wife has the right to live in the US, but only citizens can avail themselves of unfettered access to the Embassies and Consulates. As you've seen yourself, you must show an American passport to gain access without appointment.

  3. Yes, since she will have official business not concerning visa issuance.*
