I have a beige hooded female baby rat ( 6 weeks ) and I was wondering if she could eat the kind if rawhide bones you give dogs as a treat and to keep her teethe healthy and also to give her something to do.

I have a small chihuahua and so she has the small white little rawhide bones.

P.S. If you know of any great treats for rats then could you please list some.

THANX..........!!!

  2. "You should offer some chew toys for your rats. Some rats like rawhide chews, and most like wood and cardboard chew toys. All bones, even chicken bones, are safe for rats."  - Rat Report http://www.ratfanclub.org/cages.html

Other good treats for rats are frozen peas, cheerios, grapes, lettuce/spinach, carrots, the occasional nut (mine love peanuts in the shell), etc.

Here's some sites that has some other excellent ideas:

Remember everything in moderation; too many nuts or sweets can be bad for your rats and make them sick or fat.  Also be careful of foods that are natural laxatives.  For example, tomatoes and raisins can make your rats' p**p icky if you give them too much.  Additionally, do not give your rats dried corn, as a fungus that can be found in it reacts badly with the rats stomach and can cause cancer.

    Hope that helps!

  3. Yes but she probably won't chew it more than a few times. Rats don't need chew toys to keep their teeth healthy. Rats will sit and grind their teeth together when they feel them getting uneven or too long.

The best treats are not found in pet store, but they are found in the baby section of the grocery store. They have yougurt puffs, fruit puffs, crackers and all sorts of fun toddler treats that are better for you rat than the c**p they make pet food out of.
