Can they make us come in to school on our weekends for a memorial. I told them I couldn't go because of other commitments such as sport in another city and birthday parties but they said that if I don't come I will get a detention on monday afternoon and saturday morning. Can they do this? I live in Australia, Queensland and go to a private school

  1. Yes, because you go to a private school.

  2. your at a private school, so they dont have to follow any set dates.

so yes... your school can do that, sorry mate :)

  3. First, Australia has different laws than the US so most people won't be able to answer this question here. Second, it would seem to me that, as a private school, they can basically do anything they want. Either way, you'd have to take it to court to find out.

When I was a kid in a Catholic private school in the States, we were expected to be in the school yard on Mother's Day in our uniforms or communion outfits to honor the Blessed Mary. You'd better have been there.

  4. I assume they can at a private school.

  5. no they cannot do this

  6. i dont think so, but i need to know more about what you have to come in for

  7. No not really.  I would call their bluff and not go.  If you have the backing from your parents, then don't go.

Unless something along these lines was in the forms your parents signed when they enrolled you, they have got nothing.

I checked the forms I signed for my kids and there is nothing in them about attending school outside normal advertised school hours.

  8. Private school- yes, you probably signed something,

  9. Probably, yes.

If you want to make a statement about the unfairness, take the detention.

  10. Having gone to a Private School in Queensland, I highly doubt they would do that. More than anything, it's probably a way to 'encourage' students to turn up. As far as I know, unless it was in a document your parents signed, then no they can't. I would suggest calling their bluff, but tell you Mum and Dad beforehand and make sure they know what the school has said. I find that most Private Schools are too scared of lawsuits to overstep their legal authority.

  11. Private schools have their own rules.
