Can my son be fired for this?

My son works at a Ford Dealership

He wanted to buy a truck, and we talked to the sale manager who was very clear, he would not come down on the price of the truck that my son wanted.

We have a Ford from the same dealership, each time we have needed service, ie, paint came off the roof after 29 months, rear axle broke and had to be replaced, we had to go to another Ford dealership, because where we bought it always just said no.

So, my question is, can they fire my son for Me and My husband buying him a new truck from another dealership. His name is not on the title.

  1. No, in fact you could sue them into closure for trying.

What you are suggesting can NOT be on an employee contract in any western country. simple as, it's illegal.

  2. Most places can fire you for anything.  I don't think there is a problem with that though.

  3. NO, but they might find a reason if they find out that you bought a truck from another dealership, more than likely they wont, so I wouldnt worry about it.

  4. They couldn't for that reason but that doesn't mean they couldn't come up with some excuse.

  5. No they won't fire your son, what can they fire him for? You bought the truck not him, the only thing he's guilty of is being spoiled but lucky him, now he's got a new truck.  So if he did lose his job at least he's got tranportation to find another one.

  6. Like Wendy C said, "If he works in an "at will" state.. he can be fired with no reason whatsoever."   A lot of people don't realize this and think it's unfair (myself included), but that's the way it is.

If they actually fired your son for this, I think the best course of action would be to publicize this information to every media outlet possible.  Write letters to the editor of the local newpapers, contact local TV stations/radio, etc.  Heck, maybe even make signs and picket outside the dealerships lot.

While firing your son may not be illegal, it is certainly unethical, and you have every right to cause them as many P.R. headaches as possible.

  7. No!  fired on what grounds? even if he drove to work in a Toyota he can't be fired,

  8. absolutely not.. they sound crazy enough to attempt it, but unless its some sort of requirement for the position, it would not be legal for them to fire your son because of that.

  9. No.  No they can't.

  10. I do not believe so.Not at all.If he was .I think I would be going to the labor board.

  11. If he works in an "at will" state.. he can be fired with no reason whatsoever.  In a competitive business like a car dealership, their entire business relies on high sales and team players.

And in today's economy, car sales are EXTREMELY slow now, meaning less staff/ sales people are needed.

If he is fired.. you would have to prove that it was due to what you did.

  12. I don't care where you work...you can spend your money anywhere you want to...you is not held to spend your money where you earn it. So the answer is no...if he have a problem...seek a lawyer!!!!

  13. Of course not.  He could sue them for unfair dismissal if they did.

  14. only if he signed an agreement to buy only from the dealer he's employed with!
