Question:

Can my teacher count off of my grade for this?

We have to write a myth in our language arts class and I've been spelling words the way the English spell them. (I'm an American). My friend thinks that our teacher can take off for that. I said that she couldn't because it is the actual way to spell the words. We just changed the spelling so I'm not spelling them wrong. So can my teacher count off for that?

  1. Unless you live in England, yes.  We use American English in the US, so you need to spell with American English.  You are spelling them wrong.  Quit trying to be a smart asss.

  2. The person to ask would be your teacher--He or she certainly can count off for it--the question is:  will s/he?

  3. What does the teacher say?  Why don't you ask before you turn in your paper?

  4. There is U.S English and then there is actual English.

So yes, while theoretically you are speaking correct English when you spell things British (or even how we do here in Canada for the most part) it is still wrong because you yourself live in the U.S.

I suppose that your teacher could take away marks for that, it would be best to ask them first.

Personally I don't see why they would, but English teachers tend to be strict on spelling.

  5. If they are in your classroom dictionary, I'd say you were definitely safe (some words have dual spellings), but I think since this is a myth--it might show creativity.  I would just be sure to tell the teacher in an attached note that you purposely chose to do the English spellings to add to the realism of the period in  your writing.  I'm not sure I'd do it regularly.  We Language Arts teachers have a hard enough time correcting words found in the American Standard dictionary, never mind the British Standard...LOL!!

Personally, I'd think it would show additional creativity--then again, your teacher might not feel that way.  You could always ask her/him!

  6. They certainly can.  You should talk with your teacher to find out her policy regarding spelling is before you do this.  I wonder what your motivation is - if it is to enhance your writing then your teacher may choose to make an exception for you if she gives you prior approval.  If it just a personal preference than you would be wise to follow class policy and toe the line here.
