  1. Only some syrian (teddy bear) hamsters' hair grows long.  It depends what fur type they have.  If yours didn't have long hair when you bought him then he won't grow long hair.  You would have to be VERY careful cutting a hamster's hair.

  2. The cuteness of teddybear hamsters in in their long hair, hence it is very rare for people to trim the hair of their teddy bears. However if you feel that long hair is a hindrance, I suggest you take him to a vet and learn from the vet how to trim the hair carefully and gently so that you can do it regularly.

I still feel since you bought him only recently, why don't you return him back to the pet shop and get a short haired hamster since they can do justice by giving him to another home where the people are long hair lovers rather than you having to trim his long fur for the rest of his life.

  3. I guess you can, but I wouldn't because the type of hamster you have is used to having long hair, and will be very cold if you cut it off. If the hair is not bothering the hamster then I would advise you let him be.

Hannah B is right, it is also quite possible that his hair won't even grow that long.

  4. I used to have a long haired rabbit - and because it was so long, her p**p used to stick to the fur & it was gross! so I used to trim her fur.

You can do it yourself - as long as you're VERY careful - get someone to help you do it.

I would however, advise you ask your vet to help out as they are less likely to end up injuring your hamster.

  5. I wouldn't try and cut it, hamsters are very fidgety and so if it moves you could cut its skin, its ok with rabbits because they are bigger and move less but hamsters will always try and squirm.

    Good Luck

  6. You don't cut their hair.  You let it grow the way it is.  I have had about 6 Teddy Bear hamsters.  I wouldn't think of cutting their hair.  What is wrong with you?
