Question:

Can my truck still run if someone stole my catalytic converter?

After getting off of work and starting my Toyota Highlander truck at the park and ride, it made an extremely loud noise. My co-worker looked under my truck and said that it looks like part of a pipe is missing. I drove all the way home with my truck making that horrible noise, like a bad muffler sound. My truck will be seen at the shop on Monday, which is two days away. I was just wondering if I would've been able to drive home if it was taken off by someone?

  1. yes it will run loud but ok...you will pollute,,,dont park there again..i hope you go to muffler shop 200 dollars not dealer 800 dollars

  2. Well, far enough to get it to the shop to be fixed anyway,  You will make lots of noise and may attract the attention of the local police, but just tell them your catalytic converter was stolen, and you're on the way to get it fixed.  Unfortunately that is happening a lot these days, they bring a lot at the scrap metal places.

Your O² sensors will be giving the wrong signals to the computer, and it will be trying to compensate for what it's seeing, which means your engine will be running too rich and your mileage will suffer, and eventually it won't be able to compensate and the check engine light will come on, but they will reset that when they put on the new converter.

  3. Sure, just don't get a ticket for noise. Also remember that you have exhaust gases coming up from under truck. Try Keeping the windows open

  4. yes, you can drive it. Your engine light might come on because of it but not too worry, it's not doing any real harm to the engine...just the environment due to the "free" exhaust
