Question:

Can my tv be repaired or should I get a new one?

About a month ago my apartment flooded. I had my tv, dvd player, and a lamp plugged into the same power strip/surge protector. There ended up being about an inch of water in the apartment and the surge protector got some water in it. The dvd player and lamp still work but the tv doesn't even turn on. No water got on or in the tv. I'm in a new apartment now and have tried plugging the tv directly into a few outlets and still nothing. Could the water have shorted it or something? Is it fixable?

  1. I'm pretty sure it is fixable, all you need is a new cord, the wires MIGHT have of shocked the t.v, if it has the bulb might have busted and you probably need a new one,

  2. If the TV is not a digital TV, I would buy a new one.  If it is a digital TV, I would get an estimate for the repair and then make the decision of repairing or replacing.

  3. It might be repairable try a local tv repair shop and get a quote if its more than £200 to repair i wouldnt get it done. A new tv such as a philips 32inch LCD HD only cost £299 now from richer sounds ( brand new with a 1 yr gurantee so may be a better option to go for new if thats your only option.

All the best and i hope you get it sorted soon.

  4. First, unplug your TV and carefully examine the end that plugs into the power outlet.

Is there any sign of arcing or corrosion? If there is you probably lucked out. Clean or replace the plug. See if the TV works.

If that's not it, answer this question; how much would it cost to but a used TV in similar condition. If the answer is less than $100 (which would include almost all tube type TVs), I doubt if you want to pay a repair shop to look at it.

Now if it's a $1000 TV, then you may want to pay for someone to look at it.
