Can my university change my schedule without my consent?

I'm having this theory that my school is going to tell me that my schedule is not to their liking cause it's MWF 8-4. Is there anything they can do about that? Like, I have the right to choose my classes whenever I want....

I go to Palm Beach Atlantic university...

  1. They might need to change the schedule because the course times are changed, but if that happens, you could sign up for a different class during the registration period. Most universities, the student selects their class schedule from the various course offerings - The schedule is up to student, although sometimes a class only has one time offered.

  2. If a university changes your schedule AFTER the education contract has been finalized (which means, after you have fully paid and thus performed your end of the bargain), you can sue in tort or for breach of contract. I would sue in tort, however. The tort is called intentional interference with educational relations.

If a university changes your schedule BEFORE the education contract is finalized, you have to appeal through their internal academic appeal procedures.

  3. Why do you think they would try to do that?  I couldn’t imagine that they would.  They don’t care when you take your classes, as long as you take them, so provided that the classes you want are available (ie they’re not already filled)….

  4. What do they care if you have a certain schedule?

What's wrong with MWF 8-4, anyways?

The only time your school is going to change your schedule is if there's certain classes you're required to take that you're not currently signed up for, if a class you've already signed up for is cancelled, the time changes for one of your classes, etc.  They're not going to change your schedule just to spite you.

They could very well change your schedule without asking you, but if they did that, they'd still give you a chance to make more changes to your schedule.  After all, it's your money.

Again, if they change your schedule, it's only because they have to.  They simply cannot have you signed up for a class that doesn't exist, etc.
