Question:

Can not access windows update website due to virus?

I had a virus on my computer which I removed. The virus prevented me from accessing the Windows Update website, among other things. I got rid of the virus but I still can not access the Microsoft windows update site. Other sites work ok, and the updates site comes up fine on the computer sitting next to the problem computer, same network. I get the message in IE that says Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage. Can someone help me with this?

Thank you

  1. How did you remove the virus? Using antivirus? If so, what was it? You can't just "remove a virus" by yourself. So, are you really sure you actually had a virus and not spyware? Oh yes, do you have antispyware?

If you have a legal copy of XP, you should already be getting automatic updates, and shouldn't have to go to the website and force a download. If you are doing that, something is wrong, and it isn't a virus. Clean up your registry with Mcrosoft's Live OneCare Cleanup Scan.

  2. Maybe it's your firewall settings.  Disable your firewall and try the update.  If it goes ok, then turn on your firewall and start looking carefully at the settings.

  3. look in your restricted sites/ disallowed sites in IE settings. Also in the advanced tab restore defaults is your best bet. this will enable scripting that it uses.
