If it has got a part of the root attached it should be OK. Put it in the ground where you want it to grow and keep it nice and moist. If it is in a windy place put in a stick and tie it gently to stop it rocking about. It is important to keep it moist, bamboos are a type of grass and they need moisture to stay alive. It might take a few weeks before you see any new shoots, don't worry if the leaves go a bit brown that is just a protective reaction not to lose too much moisture.
