I would just like to know how possible it is to fit an equestrian's schedule into the life of a full time veterinarian, and how many hours for free time on average different types of vets have. Thank you. =)

  1. I suppose it depends on what competetion level you're talking about.  My vet showed her TB at dressage shows within the state and was successful, but it was a hectic schedule for her.  I suppose the amount of free time is dependent on the individual doctor's goals, practice (whether they're solo, or in a multi-doctor practice), and personal drive.  One of the large animal vets in my area is gone nearly every other weekend out pony clubbing somewhere.  He takes a lot of time off.  The docs I work for, just in the last year, after 15 years of practice, have they started scheduling such that they have one whole day a week off, with no after hours emergency calls.  (They hired in a 3rd doc to help out, and take call one night a week)  They don't seem to have very much "free time" at all, because they're always within range in case the pager goes off.

  3. It would depend on how you schedule your work time and free time. If you are working 10 hours a day 6 days a week as a vet, you probably won't have much time to do other things that take up lots of time. If you want free time, or have a family or social life, then it would be hard to do it all.

You would need to figure out your priorities. What is important to you and what are you willing to sacrifice.

Your free time as a vet would depend on your practise. If you are the only vet, you will not have a lot of free time as you have to keep the practise running. If you work with other vets in a larger clinic, you may have more flexibility with your schedule.

If you feel that you are willing to make time for a full time Vet career and doing Equestrian, then go for it.
