I have been a U.S. Bank checking account holder for one year now. I wrote a check and the bank charged me 6 times $35, a total of $210. I went into the bank to discuss the issue with the District Manager and the bank called the police who gave me a trespassing ticket.

  1. thats BULLL. they cant do that. Banks are such a******s. they try to nickel and dime you to death. I would definetly try a credit union...

  2. Banks are getting like airports, Crappy service and if you complain you are the problem. Being adamant gets you "special attention".

  3. Yeah I have a feeling you left out a few details. Like did your check bounce? Or perhaps some extra purchases? They wouldn't charge you for 6 times for 1 transaction. And if they called the police I'm sure you left out a friendly detail like getting carried away and screaming and yelling. Be thankful it was only a trespassing ticket.

  4. why do I get the feeling there's more to this story.....

did you maybe leave out the part where you went into a screaming rage inside the bank?

  5. Banks are taking big hits on loan losses and net interest margins, so they are trying to make it up with fees.

If you have six checks clear in one 24-hour period, and your balance goes into the negative, they will charge you for six overdrafts.  The regulators just look the other way - same as they do with the credit card companies.

Take dap's advice, and try a credit union.  Or, a small community bank.  Only deal with institutions that are small enough that you can actually talk with someone capable of making a decision.

And, file formal complaints with every agency you can find.  The Comptroller of the Currency is the bank's federal regulator.  Also file a complaint with your state's division of financial institutions or the equivalent.  File another complaint with your state's Attorney General's office.  And the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).  Nothing will change unless consumers take action.
