  1. yes

  2. The rule is - Yes, you can... but if you have to ask - you probably shouldn't even attempt it.

Now, having said that... Yes you can do it,  many do... many more do it with a "first mate" on board - though sometimes (in a few cases) the "first mate" is clueless and useless - at least when it comes to handling the boat.

Much more fun and much cheaper if you do it in a sail boat however. Don't know where you plan to go "island hopping" but if its the Caribbean you still need the "right" boat - whether sail or power - both the lack of fuel and the lack of fresh water - (equally) turns back many ill-prepared and unhappy boaters.  (I don't know which is worse never sailing off to Paradise, or sailing off to Paradise and arriving with no fuel or water and discovering there is none... )

  3. There are no rules about singlehanding a boat other than the wisdom of keeping a safe watch while under way. There might be rules about where you can anchor out when not under way depending on where you are.

  4. Get a chart and find an anchorage. We call it anchoring. gunk hole-ing or cruising. Have fun and hope yer ground tackle holds. Fly a cocktail bur-gee when you want guests

  5. I did for yrs 40' Sailing> Now have a 48' sportfish> Nice to have a girl crew>
